It is unclear what Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon's long-term policy on the Palestinians is, although in the short-term the removal of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat seems to be his goal. Many 'doves' in Israel believe Sharon has no intention of achieving a lasting ceasefire or permanent deal.
