Large Japanese companies are buying equipment from Hewlett-Packard to save costs, enhance performance and obtain the most advanced systems. Kobe Steel's Okubo plant's Hewlett-Packard server has saved costs by 50%. It offers excellent software and flexible hardware which can run packaged software. Sanwa Bank is building a state-of-the-art system to integrate its treasury operations, and is using Hewlett-Packard servers for quick performance. 7-Eleven Japan's new decision-support system will send and receive data through Hewlett-Packard advanced servers.

Hewlett-Packard has negotiated joint ventures with its Japanese counterparts to meet increasing competition. Most partnerships are original-equipment manufacturing arrangements. Hitachi is manufacturing two versions of Hewlett-Packard's Precision Architecture (PA)-RISC chip, and is part of a nine-member Hewlett-Packard PA-RISC organization, along with Oki and Mitsubishi. OS Network assits its seven Japanese systems integrators to understand downsizing and open systems. Software companies such as Oracle are also Hewlett-Packard's partners.

Revolutionary servant: Hewlett-Packard shakes Japan's computer market
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard's use of high technology has increased the company's business by 60% in one year in Japan. The company's open systems based on Unix, are cheaper and more flexible than proprietary systems. The reduced instruction set computing (RISC) has improved cost-performance by approximately 70% a year. Hewlett-Packard is also tying up sales contracts with major Japanese computer companies, and has hired independent system integrators and software houses. It expects its annual sales in Japan to exceed US$1 billion by 1996.
