What's the big idea?
Article Abstract:
The UK government is very keen to encourage innovation and creativity. Most businesses accept that innovation should be a priority, but few actually see themselves as being able to innovate effectively. Producing new ideas can be challenging, and it can be even more challenging to try to actually put them into practice. Innovation requires companies to think in completely new ways, and also involves allowing everyone to have an idea. Small businesses need to be aware of the risks of failure when they seek to innovate, but must also be prepared to take risks.

How we've learned the hard way
Article Abstract:
The post-war era has seen business and industry learn four main lessons. The first concerns economics and the acceptance that knowledge creates wealth. Secondly, training and development for employees is now regarded as an investment, rather than an unnecessary cost. The third lesson involves leadership in management; the ability to manage change. Lastly, the ability to learn what was valid in the past, may not be appropriate for the future.
