When leaves begin to dance
Article Abstract:
There has been a gradual relaxation of censorship of the arts in Iran, and this is illustrated by the release of the movie 'Two Women' and its images of married life. There has been a new affirmation of secular culture in the statement of culture minister, Ataollah Mohajerani that classical music from Europe is beautiful. The ministry can grant funds for the arts, so the minister's views carry some weight. There have been exceptionally inventive works in Iranian cinema as a result of repression, so greater tolerance is a mixed blessing.

Culture wars
Article Abstract:
There have been concerns about the dominance of US culture in some countries such as France and Canada. The US is able to dominate the motion picture market, but the US itself is invaded by foreign media outlets such as TV broadcasts in Spanish. European and other foreign musical groups have been successful in US markets. Italy and France play a major role in fashion. US dominance is not as pervasive as may first appear, and taste cannot be dictated through restrictions such as quotas.
