The French left begins to falter
Article Abstract:
The French prime minister, Lionel Jospin, faces slower economic growth in 1999 which means that unemployment is unlikely to fall, and this could affect job creation schemes and co-operation from labor unions. Jospin appears to have moved to a position that is more in favor of the free market and there could be a rebellion from members of government from the political left. Meanwhile the French political right is becoming stronger, and the center right should benefit from divisions in the far right.

France, divided by Europe
Article Abstract:
The French political right set up an alliance in 1998 to bring together the three largest parties on the right. This alliance is being undermined by divisions on French relations with the rest of Europe. There are five groups from the center-right which will have their own candidates for elections for the European parliament in 1999, as well as two lists from the extreme right. There is a range of views, from those that favor closer ties with Europe, to those that oppose such links.

Still divided
Article Abstract:
There are several candidates seeking to lead the Gaullist party, Rally for the Republic, in France. There are divisions within the party on European integration, and the candidates vary in terms of how they view this. Philippe Seguin is one candidate accepting integration, while Charles Pasqua has left the party and set up Rally for Frane, which opposes the treaty of Maastricht. Nicolas Sarkozy has announced that he does not plan to stand as a candidate.
