Where business meets justice
Article Abstract:
US legal education includes legal clinics where low-income clients can obtain legal aid using law students. Legal clinics have taken on a number of controversial cases, including a case against a Japanese company seeking to build a plastics plant in a poor black area of Louisiana. The governor of Louisiana, Mike Foster, supports the plant, and the Supreme Court of Louisiana has reduced the number of people who can obtain legal aid. Loyola Law Clinic director, Bill Quigley, is running for a Supreme Court seat and is campaigning for justice and democracy.

Words and deeds
Article Abstract:
Attempts are being made to tackle institutional racism in the British armed forces and police. The home secretary, Jack Straw, will set goals for recruitment levels from Asian and black groups. Blacks and Asians are underrepresented in the armed forces and police, and absent from the higher ranks of each institution. The armed forces are already tackling the problem, and their changes could be an example for the police to follow.
