Coir dust, a coconut by-product that used to accumulate as unwanted waste, has found a commercial use as a plant-growing medium because of its alkalinity and high water retention. Dutch Plantin exports processed Sri Lankan coir, and expects 1992 sales to reach $1.5 million.
