Whitbread's pretax earnings rise 3%

Whitbread PLC posted an improvement of 3% in its yearly profit. The company also stated that it was looking into the possibility of reacquiring up to 10% of its shares if a proposed deal with Allied Domecq PLC falls through. Whitbread is planning to acquire Allied Domecq's pubs. The company posted a rise in pretax profits to 365.3 million pound sterling ($594.9 million) for the year ending on February 27, 1999.
