Why architects must take the initiative over CO2
Article Abstract:
The construction industry can contribute towards a healthier environment via control of CO2 emissions from buildings. The architectural profession has a responsibility and must act before required to do so under future Building Regulations. Suggestions from Arthur Quarmby that the UK requirements should equal those in Scandinavia are queried, as the UK is already purported to have comparatively high standards in areas such as thermal insulation. The profession should contribute more in future to CO2 emission control, with design measures incorporating limited initial energy input.

RIBA launches city workshops
Article Abstract:
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is to hold workshops where students, architects and local people will discuss urban renewal in specific areas. The workshops will be held in various cities and concentrate on difficult sites. They follow the successful Drawing on London project sponsored by RIBA pres, Richard MacCormack who believes architects have a role to play in urban renewal. The workshops will produce design solutions that can be incorporated into local planning strategies.

Product review
Article Abstract:
Building designers have a unique opportunity to contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Buildings account for about 50% of the UK's CO2 emissions as occupants seek to control their living temperatures. Environmental design solutions should consider the efficiency of features including insulation, ventilation and glazing specifications. Designers can also select renewable materials and consider the use of alternative power sources including solar power.
