Why banking mergers often fail
Article Abstract:
Many banks throughout the world have been, or are being, merged, but the supposed benefits of improved efficiencies and cost savings have not yet been proven, says a report by Standard & Poor's. Many scholars and analysts are unconvinced that economies of scale are even achievable, says the report. A study was made of 30 top American banks, some of which had been involved in prior mergers, but the level of efficiency achieved was similar among all banks irrespective of their engagement in mergers. Cost savings were not made in relation to the increased size of the bank.
