Why is Hong Kong faltering? Danger lurks on both sides of the border, requiring eternal vigilance
Article Abstract:
While the economic difficulties of Hong Kong in its post-handover environment bears watching, the manner with which China sticks to its commitment regarding civil liberties in Hong Kong is the one that requires vigilance. The international community has been instrumental in easing the first-year post-handover transition of Hong Kong, but the relatively calm first year performance of the Hong KOng regional government may lull the international community into complacency and shift their attention away from what China may do to endanger civil liberties in Hong Kong in the future. This may come in the form of senior Communist Party officials trying to subvert the Hong Kong legal procedure or Chinese companies currying favors to get an advantage in Hong Kong's active investment market.

Quest to succeed Cambodia's Sihanouk intensifies
Article Abstract:
King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia is expected to play a significant role in the future leader of the country, even as his political influence is being checked by Second Prime Minister Hun Sen. A favorite to replace the king is his son Prince Norodom Sihamoni, but his rise to leadership is being challenged by the King's brothers as well as his uncles. A leadership by Prince Sihamoni is favored by Hun Sen since he believes that Sihamoni can be turned into a titular leader with no political influence.
