Why jobs come last

Employment will lag behind economic recovery in the UK, just as it did in 1981. Severely cash strapped companies cannot afford layoffs, but as the economy improves, they can afford to let some people go. Hopefully, employment levels will improve more quickly than they did after the last recession.

The British government expects that unemployment may remain as high as 2.5 million through the 1990s. Many of the unemployed prefer to receive unemployment benefits rather than settle for a job with a lower wage.
