Will Norway be left out in the cold?
Article Abstract:
Despite the decision by Norway not to follow its neighbours Denmark, Sweden and Finland into the European Union, the move is not expected to have too much impact on the country's merger and acquisition activity. Norway's strong oil industry and the wealth of its natural resources are expected to bolster its chances of successfully standing alone in Europe. It is forecast that Norwegian companies will seek acquisitions in Finland, Denmark and Sweden to gain access to the wider Eurpean market. An overview of M&A activity in the Nordic region is presented.

Another boom year
Article Abstract:
The UK saw 1,689 corporate takeovers in 1996, at a total value of 55.9 billion pounds sterling. This performance was slightly below that of 1995, but was still a strong achievement. The level of acquisitions and mergers seems to be remaining high, with 10 public deals worth a total of 4.5 billion pounds sterling being announced in Dec 1996. The leading financial adviser on UK public takeovers ranked by value of transactions was Barings Brothers, which also led the combined UK public and private league table.
