Hold the champagne
Article Abstract:
The World Trade Organization's ministerial talks in Dec 1996 were relatively successful, especially in terms of reaching an agreement on a treaty cutting tariffs in information technology products. The conference indicated that the organisation is still operating effectively, according to Renato Ruggiero, its director-general. Asian governments performed rather inconsistently at the talks, and should now consider how to take on a more high profile role within the World Trade Organization.

Try it, you'll like it: WTO tries to soft-sell financial-market reform
Article Abstract:
The World Trade Organization's (WTO) hope of concluding an important treaty liberalizing Asia's financial markets has been hampered by turmoil in the region's unstable currency market. Foreign investors have been blamed by some for the region's woes and talk of market liberalization has become unpopular. However, the WTO is holding a series of meetings in a bid to persuade Southeast Asian governments that there are benefits to liberalization.
