Wing and a prayer
Article Abstract:
Investors may be willing to consider favourably the Jul 1997 listing of the China Southern Airways due to faith in the Chinese market, rather than the record of the airline itself. China Southern is not well managed and has a poor safety record, with two crashes in five years. It also has a debt-to-equity ratio of 310%. However, the significant fact about China Southern, with air travel in China looking set to continue its rapid growth, is that it focuses mainly on the domestic market. Over 86% of its operating profits came from this source in 1996.

What are PALs for?
Article Abstract:
The Philippine govt's meddling in Philippine Airlines' affairs exemplifies how political interference keeps that country from achieving all it could. The govt wants all the benefits of privatizing the airline as well as the advantages of control, so it denies the owners the right to operate as they see fit, even to make mistakes. That hurts the airline and all those who would benefit if it ran properly. Similar problems persist regarding the Manila Hotel, a recent energy plant bid on by Gordon Wu, and more.

Unhappy landings
Article Abstract:
The economic crisis in Asia has had a negative impact on Malaysia Airlines, which has seen falling demand and rising costs in US dollar terms. Its debt has reached 12 billion ringgit, while traffic declined by 2.7% in the second half of 1997 from the year-earlier period. It has cut costs by deferring new aircraft purchases worth more than 7 billion ringgit and eliminating unprofitable routes. It has been slow to acknowledge the extent of its financial difficulties, and this has damaged investor confidence.
