Worlds apart
Article Abstract:
Local people reflect on the violent conflict which arose five months earlier in western Indonesia. Hundreds of people died in the conflict between the Dayaks and the minority Madurese populations in the West Kalimantan area in Feb 1997. Indonesia is home to 300 ethnic groups, but this was the worst outbreak of violence in its 52 year history. The government is researching into the causes of the conflict and trying to promote understanding. Neighbours of different ethnic groups have little personal animosity towards one another, but bitter feelings are deeply held and conflict could erupt again.

Monopoly of virtue
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's monopoly food purchaser and distributor Badan Urusan Logistik Nasional (Bulog) is changing its image. Bulog has been a central part of Indonesia's crony culture for the 30 years to spring 1998, shaping the market by awarding contracts to President Suharto's friends and relatives and allowing importers to charge commission. However, Bulog announced in 1998 that it will, henceforth, invite tenders for all purchases. It has also entered an agreement with the International Monetary Fund to supply staple foods at subsidized prices as a means of addressing Indonesia's poverty.

Playing with ire
Article Abstract:
The reasons for the protests against ethnic Chinese in Java are unclear although they might be manipulated by the Indonesian government to get the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to relax its financial pressures on Indonesia. President Suharto may want to claim that Indonesia faces civil unrest unless this happens. There is no evidence that the government is directly involved but Human Rights Watch claims that this is the case. IMF representatives visited Indonesia in February and they are disappointed that Indonesia has not made more progress with its reforms.
