YTL's high-priced initial offering is a 'trust me' move
Article Abstract:
YTL Power International Sdn. Bhd. of Malaysia is set to have a $280.2 mil, 60-mil-share initial public offering (IPO) in May 1997 at a price of $1.65 per share. The high-priced IPO, about 17 to 20 times analysts' forecast earnings for 1997, will be offered to individual Malay investors with only a 15% discount, down from the usual 40% to 50% discount given to the bumiputras. Positive reception is expected due mainly to company managing director Datuk Francis Yeoh's track record for effective financing strategies.

Blackout casts shadow on Tenaga shares
Article Abstract:
A series of electric power failures are casting clouds on Malaysia's Tenaga Nasional's future. Residents are reportedly planning to sell their shares in the utility due to its inefficiency. Analysts say that Tenaga's plans for a near-term electricity-tariff increase is unlikely to get the government's approval given the uncertainty surrounding its stock. Meanwhile, opposition says Tenaga should be made to pay for the losses suffered by consumers and local industries.

Malakoff move has promise
Article Abstract:
The decision of power generator Malakoff of Malaysia to buy a large power project from utility titan Tenaga Nasional holds promise, and several observers deem the deal as a potentially win-win situation. Furthermore, the decision is in keeping with the industry trend of Tenaga contracting electricity generation to independent power makers, while Tenaga concentrates on transmission and distribution.
