HSBC's Asian unit faces a tough test in bid to become retail fund powerhouse
Article Abstract:
HSBC Asset Management Asia Pacific (HSBC Asset Management) CEO Robert Duggins intends to make his company one of the top three mutual fund retail providers by the year 2001. Duggins is also confident that HSBC Asset Management will be able to boost its retail share of net profit to 50% within the next decade. Observers believe that the company will have a difficult time achieving these objectives in view of its poor retail record and the fact that Asia's mutual fund markets are usually dominated by local players.

Mutual funds industry sees education as key to increasing participation of Asian investors
Article Abstract:
The mutual funds industry in Southeast Asia suffers from a lack of appreciation of its benefits by the public who prefer to buy stocks that enable them to reap profits within a short period of time. A survey of Hong Kong investors, reputedly the most sophisticated in the region, showed that only 7% were aware of mutual funds while 54% knew about the ins and outs of stocks. In light of these findings, an educational campaign is underway to correct misconceptions and highlight missed opportunities.

Fund-management firms find interest is growing in their non-Asian offerings
Article Abstract:
Financial advisers and mutual fund companies report a shift in interest towards non-Asian investment vehicles. Experts believe that this growing trend is largely due to strong indications of a slowdown in most Asian economies. Growing current-account deficits and declining exports are starting to affect what used to be stellar performers.
