Article Abstract:
Indonesia is experiencing another outbreak of forest fires. The fires of 1997, which caused devastating smogs in neighbouring Malaysia, cost South East Asia over $1 billion due to factors including tourism losses and lost industrial output. Indonesians will find it more difficult to extinguish the 1998 fires because meteorologists anticipate a prolonged continuation of the drought due to El Nino, and because fire-fighting resources are limited due to Indonesia's worsening economic crisis.
