Who will run Germany?
Article Abstract:
A German general election is planned for Sep 27 1998 and the main candidates for chancellor are the Social Democratic Gerhard Schroder, and Chancellor Helmut Kohl of the Christian Democrats. Both men are pragmatists and Schroder offers less regulation abd greater incentives for self reliance. Helmut Kohl has emphasised the need for labor law and welfare reform. The Free Democrats offer freer markets, but they are likely to capture only a small percentage of the vote.

Rivalry on the right
Article Abstract:
The German Christian Democrats have recovered well following a defeat in general elections. The party's chairman is Wolfgang Schauble, who is unlikely to become the candidate to be chancellor unless elections are held over the short term. Schauble has helped bring unity to the party, but has not provided a sense of direction. Volker Ruhe is a possible candidate, and appears to have more chance than Bavarian prime minister, Edmund Stoiber, due to probable opposition against a Bavarian leader heading the Christian Democrats.
