Your money ... and your life
Article Abstract:
Methicilin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria have become a major health problem in Japan. MRSA is spreading among the country's hospitals and is causing many deaths of aged and debilitated patients. Many doctors blame the problem on the Japanese tendency to overprescribe costly, broad-spectrum antibiotics. This tendency in turn is attributed to the country's health-care system which encourages hospitals to make as much money as possible from prescribing drugs. However, Japan's pharmaceutical industry argues that poor hygiene is the primary cause.

Fates worse than death: schoolyard bullying, ijime, is an old Japanese problem. But a rash of related suicides has made it a national issue
Article Abstract:
Japanese students increasingly report ijime, or school bullying, and have blamed it in a skyrocketing number of suicides. The causes behind this increase include accounting changes and greater attention, but may also show an increase in overall bullying or a media-inspired attempt to punish bullies via suicide notes. A highly conformist culture often singles out others for trivial differences, such as the way one peels tangerines, and teachers and schools are unwilling to confront or even recognize the problem.

Remote control: broadcaster kills progam on comfort women
Article Abstract:
Japanese public broadcaster NHK cancelled a planned August 15, 1996 feature on comfort women amid a journalistic scandal and reportedly heavy political pressure. A film crew visiting at the Ministry for Justice violated a pledge not to tape material, leading to a public furor and, according to NHK officials, creating a breach of trust that merited cancelling the program. Right-wing reactions to past programs on the military sex slaves may have contributed to an atmosphere favoring cancellation.
