Reginald Lewis, financier, dead at 50

TLC Beatrice International Holdings Inc Chmn and CEO Reginald F. Lewis died of brain cancer on Jan 19, 1993. A star athlete in high school, he also excelled in his academic studies. He finished his undergraduate studies atVirginia State University and later pursued a degree in law at Harvard Law School. Fresh out of law school, he joined the New York-based Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison law office. He founded the Wall Street firm Lewis and Clarkson and his TLC investment company successfully accumulated huge profits. Lewis was also a philanthropist who contributed vast amounts to charitable and educational institutions.

The UK retail egg market totalled around 564 million pounds sterling in 1994, up some 5% from 1993, with a volume of almost 6 billion eggs. The egg market is influenced by factors such as healthy eating, the move away from cooked breakfasts and an increase in vegetarianism. Battery farmed eggs dominate the market with a 75% volume share, followed by free-range with 5%. The main players, with a share of almost 50% of the market, are Thames Valley Eggs, Deans Farm Eggs, Stonegate Farmers and Daylay Eggs.
