A stillness in the ricefields
Article Abstract:
Modern science and technology has wrought extensive changes in the countryside of West Milan, Italy. The once congenial environment, a haven for farmers and animals alike, have been reduced to a strange and desolate area where the only signs of human activity are the constant drone of modern farm equipments. The celebratory mood accompanying the arrival of mondines and the sounds of nature's gaiety have been noticeably absent. Frogs and birds have died due to chemicals used in the ricefields. This is the price of progress and industrialization - collapse of man's harmonious relationship with nature.
