1997, and then what?

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's business community is preoccupied with the impending transfer of the colony's sovereignty from the UK to China. The reunification, scheduled on June 30, 1997, could open up the greatest commercial opportunity of all or it could usher in a period of uncertainty. Publicly, business leaders are claiming that the economic and commercial impact of 1997 has already been and gone since business ties between the colony and the mainland are already firmly established. However, privately, businessmen admit that it is difficult to put on an optimistic front because of their own misgivings about Hong Kong's future under Chinese rule. The darker side of reunification is already apparent, with a growing number of companies moving out of the colony and with children of prominent Chinese military officers being installed on boards of Hong Kong listed companies.

Participation si! Alienation no!

Article Abstract:

Some ethnomusicologists have incorporated the practice of learning to play a musical instrument from the culture they are studying as a means of understanding the role of music in that culture. However, this participation does not necessarily mean that the observer gains a deeper insight since some musical traditions are derivations form other cultures, and because musical experience is subjective and cannot be easily analyzed for study. However, it does minimize the alienation felt by the scholar among the people he must study.
