A crisis of credibility?
Article Abstract:
Poland's growing popularity among foreign investors could create a set of new problems for the government. Investor interest in the Polish economy is justified in view of the decline in both public finance deficits and inflation, as well as its ability to withstand the Russian crisis. Although around $500 million in investments had been withdrawn from the country since the collapse of the Russian economy in Aug 1998, causing the zloty and Polish stock prices to plummet, Poland was able to bounce back almost immediately. The currency has returned to its pre-crisis levels while foreign direct investment has started coming back. However, an 'excess of credibility' may turn out to be harmful if it encourages speculative activity. This will present a serious challenge to the government in terms of macroeconomic management.

Polish crisis that needs Western solidarity
Article Abstract:
The West needs to give sufficient technical assistance to Poland in order to help the country through its current economic crisis. However, a stable currency and banking system are prerequisites to productive Western financial investment Hyper-inflation must be alleviated by maintaining the value of the zloty, which is Poland's currency. The West can restore confidence in the zloty by acting as a borrower of last resort and committing itself to pay the interest for bank accounts held in zloties. The economic health of Poland can only be ensured if goods and services are rationed by prices to stimulate productivity.
