A gambler's throw
Article Abstract:
Kirk Kerkorian has made a bid for Chrysler though banks have yet to provide the necessary finance. There is debate as to Kerkorian's aims. One function of the bid could be to tempt a rival bid, but none has been forthcoming. Chrysler is cash-rich, and the company's management hope that its funds will provide protection in the next recession. Kerkorian argues that the fund could be reduced without the company encountering problems. He could be seeking to increase dividends or pressurising the company to buy back its own shares.

General Motors: cash back
Article Abstract:
General Motors has increased its dividend by 50% in1995. The company has seen a rise in profit with an increase in sales of automobiles, but shareprices in automotive firms have not risen as much as the market as a whole. This has led todiscontent among shareholders such as Kirk Kerkorian who announced his intention of making abid for Chrysler. General Motors may further increase its dividend, though automotive firms areseeking not to increase dividends to an unsustainable rate which could create problems in arecession.

New cars for old
Article Abstract:
The French government is seeking to boost car sales through subsidies to owners of used cars who replace them with new cars. Owners will be eligible if their vehicles are over 8 years old, and owners of large models will receive a higher subsidy than owners of smaller models. A previous scheme involved vehicles over 10 years old. The measure could boost sales by some 150,000 vehicles, and has been welcomed by the automobile industry, though critics argue that sales may simply be brought forward.
