UK profit forecast revisions doe not show a clear trend, with 627 upward forecasts and 780 downward revisions from a total of 1,407. One sector that does appear to be performing well is housing, and Graham Group, a building materials distributor is among the beneficiaries, as is Redrow, a housebuilder. Other upward revisions have been issued for Arjo Wiggins and Go-Ahead Group, while MFI, a furniture retailer, has issued a profit warning which has been followed by downward revisions.

Brokers celebrate New Year in gloomy mood

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom brokers' forecasts for corporate profits include more downgrades than upgrades. There are 1,201 downgrades, and this high number could be linked to the Asian financial crisis, while the number of upgrades is 714. Dixons is one company which has been the subject of downgrades, from 20 brokers of 23 covering the company. Bass, a brewer, and Anite, a software company, have also had forecasts downgraded, as has HP Bulmer, hit by problems in the cider industry.
