Comparison of alternative pest and soil management strategies for Maine potato production systems
Article Abstract:
A large-scale, long-term study of the potato cropping systems used in Maine was conducted to compare amended with unamended soil management strategies, conventional with reduced-input and bio-intensive pest management methods and disease and susceptible with tolerant potato varieties. The amended soil management system was found to have greatly improved soil quality. The reduced-input system yielded greater return on over variable cost than both the conventional and bio-intensive pest management strategies. The type of potato variety also affected pest dynamics.

Soil improvement following addition of chipped wood from twigs
Article Abstract:
Incorporating chipped wood from twigs (CWT) into the soil is an effective and fast way to stimulate bacterial, fungal and actinomycetal populations and to improve soil quality. The microbial stimulating ability of CWT is due to its cellulose content. The CWT's most significant and long-lasting effect was on fungal population with increases of up to 24-fold. The fungi stimulation by CWT appears to be responsible for the increase in the soil's wet-aggregate stability.
