A national survey study of bank services and prices arrayed by size and structure
Article Abstract:
Nearly 500 U.S. banks from the 50 states were selected at random to correlate their consumer and business services with organizational structure and bank deposit size. It was found that services offered expanded with size of deposits, and that banks affiliated with holding companies usually offer more services than independent banks at each level of deposit size. Prices of the services also matched, and it was determined that loan rates were not as closely related as service offerings to bank deposit size and organization structure. All in all, it was noted that as commercial banks increase in size and become a part of larger banking organizations, they offer a greater variety of financial services, the services are priced more competitively, and growth and profitability become important management goals.

Paper-based payments - a system in transition
Article Abstract:
Despite some banking experts' predictions, paper-based payment systems (bank checking accounts) are not declining with the advent of paperless transaction processing within the industry. Among the reasons why checks continue to be written, two stand out: Americans like to pay by check, and bank automation has reduced check processing costs for consumers. Checking account usage is discussed, based upon data maintained by The Chase Manhattan Bank. Also discussed are changes in the services and objectives of the Federal Reserve system and possible future scenarios for the U.S. banking industry.
