A tiger for the West's tank?
Article Abstract:
Poland is poised to become northern Europe's economic tiger. Although it still has a long way to go to catch up with Asia's tiger economies, the country's shift to capitalism has made it the fastest growing economy in all of Europe. Its economic achievements are quite impressive. The government has succeeded in bringing down inflation from nearly 1,100% in the early 1990s to just 30% in 1994. By 1995, inflation was down to 25%, the growth rate was 6.5%, the debt-GDP ratio was 14.5% and unemployment remained steady at 14.5%. In addition, Poland's small business sector is thriving even with little government support and the inadequacy of the most basic business tools. The impressive performance of the Polish economy has not gone unnoticed in the West. Foreign investors are pouring into the country, with the biggest of them coming from the US and Germany. The modernization of the Polish State Railway, Polski Koleje Panstowe, is discussed.

Smarter than the average building?
Article Abstract:
The Canary Wharf building in London offers an environment that qualifies it as an 'intelligent building.' The term intelligent building applies to office buildings whose features enable people to work efficiently and achieve maximized results from available resources and facilities at a minimum cost. Intelligent buildings are also expected to accommodate changes in its organization-tenants' individual requirements and demands. Olympia & York designed the Canary Wharf to be a building with such features. It offers a superior telecommunications set-up that is diverse, resilient and flexible, with features such as multiple cable routings and a choice of exchange sites. The building also offers standby power generation, purpose-made computer rooms with the necessary computer cabling and uninterrupted power supply units, and a multi-component system for preventing and protecting people from fire.
