A very firm handshake: Biotech's growing negotiating power
Article Abstract:
The reduction in the percentage of novel drugs that originate from in-house discovery programs while relying on innovations has led small companies to aim at greater control over their programs, and thereby accelerating their path to profitability. Maturing biotech's are more likely to employ management with significant industry experience, often from major pharma companies, which means larger partners are often negotiate with former colleagues rather than academics getting their first taste of commercial drug development.

China steps towards international M&A
Article Abstract:
The changes made in the Chinese legal framework surrounding mergers and acquisitions (M&A) has enabled Invitrogen's acquisition of Chinese competitor BioAia, which is the first major acquisition, by a foreign company in the life science sector. This acquisition will enable Invitrogen to reach out to Chinese markets in a more suitable way than if the company created a joint venture or established a wholly foreign owned enterprise.

Sumitomo buys Oxford Finance

Sumitomo Corporation of America (New York), a subsidiary of Sumitomo (Tokyo) has announced that it will acquire Alexandria, VA, USA based Oxford Finance, which is involved in specialized financial services and has experience in financing biotech startups. Acquisition of Oxford Finance will provide it with an entry into the Japanese life sciences market for research collaborations and distribution agreements.
