Absolution from gilt
Article Abstract:
Investors can obtain a better return from equities and government securities in the long term, but may obtain a better return from cash over the short term. Government securities perform better with low inflation. The UK government aims to control inflation through high interest rates which will boost returns from cash. High tax rates mean that tax free savings schemes such as Tessas will become more attractive. Investors would be wise to move part of their assets into such schemes.

Tax worries
Article Abstract:
The market for UK government securities (gilts) is affected by tax changes which will affect private investors with large holdings. Capital gains tax is to be imposed on returns from gilts, but there should be inflation indexing. This change has affected the price of low-coupon gilts since investors are banking them prior to the imposition of tax. New gains in the UK market will have to come from foreign investors since UK investors have already invested fully.
