See you at the meeting
Article Abstract:
Technological advances such as video compression and integrated services digital networks have made videoconferencing systems much less expensive and much more convenient to use. Unlike the bulky systems of the early 1980s which needed special rooms and typically cost over 100,000 pounds sterling to install and even more to operate, the latest videoconferencing systems cost from between 6,000 to 30, 000 pounds and can be operated by just about anyone. In the UK, these systems are offered by companies such as British Telecom, Mercury and PictureTel, which all offer several models. At the lower end of their product range are desktop models that are about the same size as televisions and are ideal for small groups that wish to exchange information over the phone. Also available are roll-about units that can be transported from office to office and large-group systems that are meant to be used in conference rooms.

IT masters voice
Article Abstract:
Voice recognition technology is still at its infant stage. Most voice systems that are available in the market are usually primitive and still need to be improved. Despite these limitations, these instruments are becoming popular in several fields. For instance, voice recognition devices that generate a certain type of response or are part of a dialogue are currently being used by such entities as the Salt Lake City police force, Maui Pineapple and Bank of Scotland Card Services. Another type of application involves recognition, conversion into characters and digitization of spoken text. The automatic dictation system is a good example of this application. Experts are currently working to improve voice technology in a way that can enhance operations of businesses. Although more popular in the US, it is steadily finding its way into European countries.

Communications - the new horizon
Article Abstract:
1985 was a watershed year for telecommunications in Great Britain, with the introduction of cellular radio (allowing telephone communications in automobiles). In 1983, the British government licensed two companies, Total Access Communications System and Telecom Securicor Cellular Radio, to provide cellular radio service to Great Britain for a 25-year period. These companies have subsequently established the Vodafone and Cellnet networks, respectively, for car telephone communications. They plan to increase this radio phone coverage by 80 percent, with the addition of more ground stations for transmitting cellular radio signals. One cellular automobile telephone is described in detail, the Phillips M7000, which retails for 1,499 pounds sterling and is available from Phillips Cellular Radiophone of Great Britain.
