Across the border and into the tangle
Article Abstract:
Doing business in Europe is a very complicated matter given the vast legal, accounting, taxation and cultural differences among countries. Although the greater part of Europe is set to be unified into a single market, the region has yet to succeed in harmonizing its various accounting procedures, fiscal requirements and business practices. Many companies are coming to depend on their accounting systems to support their European operations. The challenge for these companies is finding a system that is truly pan-European, one that can deal with complexity of trading in Europe. Software companies claiming that their products are 'multicurrency' and 'multilanguage' usually have a different understanding of the terms. A truly pan-European accounting system is one that complies with the major accounting standards in the region and can be connected with online databases offering information on the latest legislative developments in Europe.

Homework as a growth industry
Article Abstract:
Teleworking is the practice of working at or from home through information technology and telecommunication processes. The practice is on the rise in the UK with estimates putting the number of teleworkers between 300,000to 1.5 million, a figure expected to increase to 2.5 million by 1995. The increase in teleworking, or telecommuting, can be attributed to its benefits toboth employees and employers. The rise in teleworking in turn led to the increase in telecottages, local business centers that supply teleworking facilities to those who cannot afford them, especially in geographically isolated areas. However, mostly big companies profit from telecottages althoughself-employed workers constitute the majority of teleworkers. In response to the situation, the national charity Acre appointed a teleworking consultant andestablished the Telecottage Assn. BT and Mercury are also active in helping others set up teleworking programs.
