An ace up Labour's sleeve
Article Abstract:
There are rumors that the UK Labor party could win an election and abolish or cut tax credits for dividends. The Labor party is likely to be influenced by the Institute for Fiscal Studies which has examined the UK corporate tax system and made recommendations which include the end of dividend tax credits. Reform is needed because the tax system tends to encourage debt as a source of finance for investment rather than investment funded by retained profits, and because there is a lower tax rate on distributed profit due to dividend tax credits.

Miras faces Labour hatchet
Article Abstract:
UK tax relief on mortgage interest could be abolished in Jul 1997. This tax relief is worth some 340 pounds sterling annually and is granted at 15% for 30,000 pounds sterling of mortgage loans. The value of Miras rises when interest rates are raised. The UK Council of Mortgage Lenders argues that abolition could hit the recovery in the UK residential real estate market, but some lenders do not oppose the abolition of this relief. Miras can affect the type of mortgage product sold, leading to a reduction in flexibility.
