George Soros is a financier who played a major role in the departure of the UK from the European exchange rate mechanism (ERM). He also carries out philathropic work such as making donations to orphans in Yugoslavia. He is promoting a book on his exploits in London, England, where he was a student at the London School of Economics. He will not comment on problems facing the ERM in 1995, and denies that the Bundesbank played a role in his decision to end the UK position in the ERM.
