Anthony Atala
Article Abstract:
Anthony Atala, director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine and his group has reported the first human trial of tissue-engineered bladders. Atala, a trained pediatric urological surgeon, became interested in the potential of tissue engineering to improve surgical outcomes and address shortages of donor organs during a 1990-1992 fellowship under Alan Retik at Children's Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School, and a single-minded focus on bringing scientific advances to patients has driven his pioneering work in tissue engineering.

Isolation of amniotic stem cell lines with potential for therapy
Article Abstract:
The isolation of human and rodent amniotic fluid-derived stem (AFS) cells that express embryonic and adult stem cell markers is reported. The examples of differentiated cells obtained from human AFS cells and exhibiting specialized functions have enclosed neuronal lineage cells secreting the neurotransmitter L-glutamate or expressing G-protein-gated inwardly correcting potassium channels, hepatic lineage cells producing urea and osteogenic lineage cells forming tissue-engineered bone.
