Applying epistemic logic and evidential theory to strategy arguments
Article Abstract:
An extension of Mitroff and Mason's (1980) model of strategic complex policy arguments was developed by reconstituting their examination of Toulmin's (1958) argument model through epistemic logic. While Mitroff and Mason emphasized the objective states, this reformulation differentiates objective states of the world and states that are delineated by knowledge of the objective worlds. The process provides a more effective and more formal manner by which to appraise the logical consistency of complex arguments that foster strategy. Moreover, it offers managers a concrete indicator of the reliability of the logical evaluation, in particular the evidential interval. A simplified example was discussed to demonstrate the representation and processing methodologies.
