Asda blocks multi-pill buys
Article Abstract:
The UK supermarket chain Asda, has declared that it is to convert its EPOS system in order to prevent customers purchasing large quantities of painkillers. The strategy is deemed necessary as the Government introduces new legislation which has been designed to reduce the number of overdoses. By introducing a new checkout system the burden of implementing the new legislation does not fall onto the checkout operator; rather the system makes blocking multiple purchases automatic. Instore material about the new legislation is to be made available for the consumer, and Asda has already introduced the change from 24-tablet packs to just 16-packs. The legislation is operational as of September 16 1998 and will only permit the sale of analgesics in packets of 16 or less. *

Kwik Save ads to continue for mow
Article Abstract:
Somerfield, the UK supermarket group which is taking over rival group Kwik Save, plans to support Kwik Save's GB 7mn advertising spend for the foreseeable future, and will launch a Kwik Save advertising campaign in early autumn 1998 ,in addition to developing its "Annie" campaign which has been well received. Although Somerfield will reduce the number of stores using the Kwik Save facsia up to the year 2000, the Somerfield name will not appear in any Kwik Save advertising, because the conversion process will take a number of years to complete, and Somerfield may retain the Kwik Save brand indefinitely.

Article Abstract:
The UK supermarket retailer Asda, is relaunching its Farm Stores own-label brand in an attempt to compete against rival Kwik Save. The strategy includes repackaging the brand in a new green and white format, in an attempt to make the brand more easily identifiable and accessible. There will also be price reductions on 100 of the brands' lines. Some additions are to be added to the range including butter and eggs. Asda is also attempting to win over upmarket shoppers by upgrading its stores across Greater London.
