Dolores in the doldrums
Article Abstract:
Daimler-Benz has been affected by a rise in the value of the German mark in relation to the US dollar. Daimler-Benz Aerospace (Dasa) faces a rise in costs which are mostly in German marks, while sales are in US dollars. There will be some 8,800 jobs shed in Germany as part of a restructuring which should bring Dasa to profit for 1997. Dasa's work force will be reduced to 40,000 compared with 49,000 by year-end 1997, excluding additional losses at Fokker.
