BT cheered by talks
Article Abstract:
British Telecommunications (BT) may merge with Cable and Wireless, and this possibility has tended to push up the company's share price. However, fears over regulations have tended to have the opposite effect. Two brokers from a sample of six stockbrokers rate the shares a buy, while the remaining four rate them a hold. The buyers are Kleinwort Benson and Societe Generale Strauss Turnbull, and they see the proposed merger as likely to succeed. Holders include Credit Lyonnais Laing.

More questions than answers post MCI
Article Abstract:
British Telecommunications (BT) Has received $7 billion following the end of a plan to link up with MCI, which has received an offer from WorldCom. BT is talking to other possible partners in the US and GTE is cited as one possibility. A Baby Bell could also be chosen, such as Bell Atlantic. Stockholders will be given some of the $7 billion, but BT is also keen to expand in the US, and there is uncertainty relating to the company's plans.
