Carbo has sold its engineering business to focus on abrasives, drainage and plastics. There will be benefits from restructuring and acquisitions in 1998. Carbo ranks third in the European market for abrasives and supplies to the ceramics, automotive and aerospace industries. The strength of pound sterling has not made a great impact on the company's exports and there are growth opportunities in the Far East. The company's profit is forecast at some 3 million pounds sterling for 1998 to 1999.

A branch line comes good for Du Bois

Du Bois is a plastic injection moulder which ranks first in the European market for video tape boxes. The cnompany is also moving into the compact disk case market, and is producing tubes and filters for medical purposes. Demand could be boosted by the Asian and Latin American markets. Earnings per share have increased although raw materials costs have also risen. The company has invested in machinery which has meant interest payments but this is seen as an efficient use of resources.

Stadium, an electrical, electronic and plastic products supplier, has seen its share price fall below 120p, although it has an excellent growth record for its businesses. It acquires underperforming businesses and turns them around. Its electronics and plastics divisions are of similar size in terms of turnover and the company is expected to have produced profit of 6.4 million pounds sterling in 1998.
