Banco Santander is the largest bank in Spain, involved in both retail and commercial operations. The bank also holds an 11% stake in First Union and a 10% stake in Royal Bank of Scotland. The bank carried out a rescue of banesto which has seen a recovery in profits. Banco Santander is expanding in Latin America, and this is set to continue. The bank faces greater intensity of competition in the Spanish market and launched current accounts that pay interest which has contributed to this competition.

Banco Santander is the biggest financial group in Spain and is benefiting from a rise in deposit taking and lending. The bank's commission and fee income rose as mutual fund investments have risen in the first nine months of 1996. There has also been a contribution from strong financial markets. Banesto was rescued by Banco Santander in 1994 and Banesto should start to make a positive contribution from 1997. Overseas earnings are becoming increasingly important for the bank's profits.
