Bank holding company mergers with nonbank financial firms: effects on the risk of failure
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the functions of bank holding companies (BHCs) is presented. The analysis focuses on the nonbanking activities that these holding companies engage in and the impact of risk on such activities. The case is applied to attempts by BHCs to create mergers withnonbanking financial firms and compares their situation with unmerged firms. Itis shown that mergers with insurance firms decrease risk but mergers with securities and real estate firms generate risks.
