Beyond the Spreadsheet

Article Abstract:

Spreadsheets on micros are simply tools that illustrate the effect of varying elements in the system, but they lack the power to analyze. OZ is a system which is a step beyond spreadsheets. This system can hold five parallel sets of information relating to actual figures, budgeted and forecast figures, and next and last year's figures. It allows any organisational hierarchy to be built in as part of the system. It is then possible to access any of the figures for any subsidiary part of the organization or for all of it. It is capable of analyzing data for the whole organization and its divisions simultaneously. It also provides graphs if required. It is useful in the running of a practice and in management accounting.

The American Assn of Advertising Agencies, Marketing Science Institute and the Advertising Research Foundation are seeking participants for their Managing Advertising Expenditures for Financial Performance (MAX) research project. Their target participants are ad agencies, universities and marketers. MAX was developed to find ways to calculate and maximize advertising budgets.

Forecasting is one of the most mysterious aspects of running a business. The budget should be set around the middle of the range. Once the budget is adopted it should not be changed. Budget should be set high, but it should not be out of reach as to be counterproductive. Conservative figures consistent with getting capital sanctions should be given to the head office.
