Bids for beginners

Article Abstract:

There are some 40 takeovers in Britain on average every week, and this affects companies with a combined value of as much as 20 billion pounds sterling. Bids may be recommended or opposed, and large amounts may be spent on public relations, while companies and their chief executives can be adversely affected. A timetable for bids is set out by the City Code on Takeovers and Mergers. Proposals have to be set out by a bidder within a 28-day period after the announcementof a firm offer.

looking for clues on the takeover trail

Article Abstract:

Takeover targets tend to see a rise in their share price, and investors in target companies can benefit from a rise in their share prices. Possible targets for 1996 include Kwik Save. Dairy Farm may decide to increase its stake in this company, or another company may decide to buy it given the low price of its shares. Vosper Thorneycroft could be subject of a bid by British Aerospace. Crest Packaging, Allied Domecq and parts of British Gas could also be subject of bids.
