Biofilms strike back
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to demonstrate that subinhibitory levels of the aminoglycoside-class antibiotic tobramycin increase biofilm formation by various isolates of the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The findings suggest that while excessive use of antibiotics can increase resistance of many microbes to these drugs, sublethal concentrations increase bacterial drug tolerance by promoting biofilm formation.

Green light for mosquito control
Article Abstract:
A study describes the testes-specific expression of a reporter gene encoding green fluorescent protein (GFP) that allows automated sex sorting of mosquitoes for population control. The method is a critical step in mosquito Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) programs and demonstrates the utility of applying genetic engineering in mosquito control programs.
