Boeing coup puts pressure on Airbus
Article Abstract:
Boeing's acquisition of McDonnell Douglas will create a company accounting for 70% of the world market for jet airliners. Airbus Industrie accounts for most of the remainder. Airbus has 38% each held by Daimler Benz and Aerospatiale, with British Aerospace holding 20%. Airbus aims to become a joint stock company by 1999. This move is important to sustain profit levels, but divisions between owners have hampered progress. The Boeing-McDonnell Douglas deal could be the catalyst needed to promote the move.

Boeing flies into Euro flak
Article Abstract:
The European Commission (EC) is to report on a planned merger between Boeing and McDonnell Douglas. Each company will receive an account of the reservations of the EC on the impact of European competition rules on the merger. The US claims that the EC is politicizing the merger, a claim which the EC denies. Boeing sees the merger as likely to be approved by authorities in Europe and the US, and a US judgement is likely to be published in Jul 1997.
