Extra cash for premium bonds
Article Abstract:
National Savings has increased the prize money for United Kingdom premium bonds. The return from premium bonds was increased in Jun 1997 and a further increase is planned for Nov 1997. The odds of winning remain at 19,000 to 1 but more higher-value prizes will be given. Premium bonds are less generous than before May 1996, but they offer better value than the National Lottery and the stake money can be claimed back. The rate of return is also good value compared to a building society or bank for people winning average amounts, especially since tax is not paid on winnings.

Still feeling handicapped
Article Abstract:
Problems facing the UK gambling industry include the impact of the National Lottery. Betting duty is levied at 7.75% and the government proposes to reduce this to 6.75% as of Mar 1 996. The industry could benefit by some 65 million pounds sterling, according to UBS, but some gambling companies argue that the reduction is not enough. The Henley Centre argues that a cut of 2%is needed to offset the impact of the National Lottery.
