Boots
Article Abstract:
The third-quarter trading statement from Boots, the retailer and toiletries manufacturer, reported an increase in like-for-like sales of only 1.5% at Boots the Chemist, a significant slow-down. This is in spite of strong sales increases in cough and cold remedies, indicating weaknesses in other areas of its Healthcare unit. Weaknesses in Leisure, Kitchen and Home offset improvements in Photography and Food. There is also concern that newly opened stores affected sales a nearby older stores.

Analysts believe a bid for Sears is far off, although Philip Green, retail entrepreneur, would be interested in paying 340 pence per share. However it will only formally bid if Medinbond, Mr Green's investment vehicle, undertakes due diligence, and if the deal is recommended to shareholders. Other potential bidders include N Brown a mail order specialist, and Otto Versand of Germany, is said to be interested in the mail order division.
